The thing I love most about working at CommBank is the awesome people and a culture focused on supporting one another and working towards a shared vision.

What do you do day-to-day?

I work in the Financial Wellbeing team in the Digital, Operations and Technology division of the Bank. We are a mixed team of human-centred designers, behavioural economists, data scientists and strategists working together to improve our customers' financial wellbeing. As a service designer, I work on projects from across the bank to understand customer needs and motivations and design creative solutions to customer problems. A part of my role involves research to make sure we are meeting our customers’ needs. I can truly say there's never a dull day.

Why were you interested in working there?

I was drawn to the team for many reasons; the creative culture, passion for the customer, opportunity to learn from experts in the field and to be able to work towards a purpose that I genuinely believe in every day.

What rotations have you completed?

I completed my graduate program in mid-2018. My rotations supporting a Retail Banking project, the Credit Cards Acquisition and Digital Optimisation team and the Human Centred Design team. I also completed a frontline branch experience rotation for 2 months which was a highlight of the program. It’s given me such valuable knowledge and relationships that help me in my role today.

What was involved in the recruitment process?

After submitting the initial application I completed an online psychometric assessment, followed by a digital interview (similar to a Skype interview where the questions are pre-recorded). The final round was an assessment centre day with a number of other candidates. This was a day jam-packed with activities and interviews - make sure you get a good night's sleep to prepare!

What is working at CommBank like?

The thing I love most about working at CommBank is the awesome people and a culture focused on supporting one another and working towards a shared vision.

What has been challenging?

With the size and scale of CommBank, the number of opportunities is endless. Over time I’ve learnt that you can't do it all at the same time, which has been a challenge for me. My advice would be to choose carefully and pursue what you are truly passionate about. It’s better to focus on one thing at a time and do it brilliantly before moving on to the next.

What has been exciting?

The opportunity to work on some game-changing projects over the last couple of years has been a highlight for me. One example would be the opportunity to work on the exploratory research for a rooftop solar project which led to CommBank’s Green Mortgage rebate program offered to our customers.

What has given you the biggest sense of achievement?

When I am testing an idea or concept with our customers and the concept solves their problem or answers a need. It gives me so much pride and a feeling of achievement. Knowing that the idea could help improve their financial wellbeing is a big accomplishment for me.

What are the most surprising aspects of your role?

The skills I have gained, the exposure I’ve had, and the people I have worked with are things I would not have imagined before joining CommBank. The opportunity to work with leading practitioners in their field and collaborating with the likes of Harvard University has been a delight.

What advice would you give to current students interested in working for CommBank?

If you're looking for a supportive place to start your corporate career, CommBank is the place to be. The people here are always willing to involve you and support your development.
