About the Program

Our goal is to give you a real sense of what it’s like to work at Jane Street full time. Over the course of your internship, you will explore ways to approach and solve exciting problems within your field of interest through fun and challenging classes, interactive sessions, and group discussions — and then you will have the chance to put those lessons to practical use.

As an intern, you are paired with full-time employees who act as mentors, collaborating with you on real-world projects we actually need done. When you’re not working on your project, you will have plenty of time to use our office amenities, physical and virtual educational resources, attend guest speakers and social events, and engage with the parts of our work that excite you the most.

If you’ve never thought about a career in finance, you’re in good company. Many of us were in the same position before working here. If you have a curious mind, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for solving interesting problems, we have a feeling you’ll fit right in.

About the Position

As a Production Engineering intern, you’ll divide your time in the same way our full-timers do: between support rotations where we actively resolve live issues, and software engineering projects that improve our support infrastructure. Of course, we don’t expect you to know how to resolve live issues on your own yet, so we’ve designed a variety of hands-on activities that represent the variety of issues we resolve during support rotations. You’ll also learn how we use OCaml (our primary development language) in our day-to-day work, and gain exposure to the libraries and tools that are foundational to our internal systems.

The majority of your time will be spent on software engineering projects. Some projects improve the reliability of existing applications, while others involve building something new. You might write code to improve the stack of tools and systems for managing, monitoring, and configuring our trading infrastructure, or develop applications that improve our ability to support a wide variety of internal tools and systems.

The rest of your time will focus on the support issues we tackle every day. This can include shadowing and discussing live incidents, participating in post-mortems, and taking part in support simulations. These activities will demonstrate how we monitor the health of our trading infrastructure, configure internal systems, and communicate with external parties to ensure trading is operating safely and smoothly. You’ll see firsthand how we work with trading, technology, and business teams to understand and react to issues they experience during the trading day.

If you'd like to learn more, you can read about Production Engineering at Jane Street on our website.

About You

We don’t expect you to have a background in finance or any other specific field—we’re looking for smart people who enjoy solving interesting problems. We’re more interested in how you think and learn than what you currently know. You should be:

  • A strong programmer who can demonstrate high potential and an aptitude for learning
  • An excellent communicator
  • Responsible, with a sense of ownership and urgency towards your work
  • Experienced with or interested in learning about incident response (i.e., debugging and troubleshooting)
  • Comfortable operating in a Unix environment
  • Fluent in English

Please note: Jane Street will provide flights to and from Hong Kong as well as accommodation throughout the entirety of the program.
