Your role

They have opportunities for recent or upcoming graduates interested in a consulting career in qualitative social research (focus groups, in-depth interviews, literature reviews, report writing, etc,) and thereby understanding and measuring how people think, feel and behave, to provide insights for projects for the public sector clients. Flexibility to travel throughout Australia at short notice and to work weekday evenings is required. The position is a mid-year start.

Successful applicants will work across a number of teams and research disciplines to develop and hone their technical and professional research and consulting skills, as well as take part in a graduate project with peers.

About you

To be considered for this role you must meet the following selection criteria:

  • Be an Australian Citizen/PR
  • Graduate or postgraduate qualification(s) in science (a range of majors considered), psychology, geography, communications or marketing
  • Studies in social research methodology are advantageous
  • Strong tertiary academic record (HD average, WAM of over 80) and strong ATAR results

General Technical Skills:

  • Understanding of science methods and research methodologies
  • Experience with PowerPoint, Word and Excel

Additional Specific Technical Skills/Experience Requirements:

  • Experience interacting professionally with stakeholders, clients and/or the general public
  • Scientific, objective, logical, team-oriented
  • Flexibility to travel around Australia, and work evenings and weekdays on a regular basis (2-3 days per week), at short notice
  • Driver's licence advantageous, not essential

Professional Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced communication skills – both verbal and written with clear spoken English
  • Ability to travel regularly to conduct focus groups and interviews
  • Time management and organisation skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure, to short timeframes, and in a constructive and helpful manner
  • An interest in, and possible understanding of, the public sector environment
  • A positive mindset, resilient and ‘can do’ attitude, maintaining a solutions focus - ensuring you are positive with those around you
  • Adaptability, energy, and flexibility to work with varying workloads including during peak periods

Compensation & benefits

As a graduate qualitative research assistant, you will receive a commencing salary of AUD 61,000 per annum plus superannuation and experience the following benefits:

Training & development

The program is underpinned by a Competency Framework and a clear progression pathway. It provides the opportunity and support to learn and develop qualitative research skills (as well as quantitative skills as desired), and the technical and non-technical skills required for a successful career in the private sector and the market and social research industry.

Graduates in the professional research stream will be exposed to a broad range of research and consulting skills including:

  • Understanding and designing qualitative research methodologies
  • Organising and conducting research fieldwork, including online surveys, interviews and focus groups
  • Project management and coordination
  • Qualitative data analysis and integrating qualitative and quantitative data in a meaningful way
  • Problem-solving, drawing insights from findings and report-writing
