Consistently voted as one of the top intern programs in Australia since 2018 (AAGE), the Public Transport Authority’s (PTA) Vacation Student Program provides opportunities for current university students to work alongside experienced and skilled engineers who will assist them in developing an understanding of the PTA’s business and enable them to apply their skills in a practical setting.

With access to leading-edge technology and the support of our expert team, successful applicants will get to tackle unique infrastructure challenges that deliver tangible benefits to the Western Australian community and contribute to a more sustainable future for our state.

The twelve-week program will run from Monday 20 November 2023 to Friday 16 February 2024. Students will be assigned a workplace supervisor and will complete meaningful work during their placement enabling them to make an active contribution to the PTA.  They will also be part of a networking group that also connects them with a current/previous PTA Graduate.

The PTA also offers a friendly and professional working environment and a range of benefits. For more information on the PTA please visit our website.

How to Apply

To apply for the 2023/24 Vacation Student Program, applicants must be studying towards a Bachelor's Degree in either Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronic (or equivalent) as described in the JDF.

Please note: Preference will be given to students currently in their penultimate year of study.

 To be considered for these positions, please attach the following:

  • A current CV including two references (work-related or university lecturer);
  • A copy of your recent academic transcript for all relevant qualifications (used to verify your WAM); and
  • A completed Integrity and Qualification Consent Form (attached) as all PTA positions are subject to ongoing integrity screening.

On the application form, you will be asked to:

  • State your interest discipline; and
  • State why you are applying for this program.

Applicants who are shortlisted for further assessment will be asked to undertake psychometric testing. Course Weighted Average Marks (WAM’s), current year of study, and psychometric testing results will be assessed as part of the application process.  Please refer to the Vacation Student Handbook for further details pertaining to the recruitment process and associated timeframes.

Although preference will be given to Australian / New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, consideration may be given to applicants who have an appropriate visa subclass to allow them to be employed up to and including November 2024.

Please ensure you allow plenty of time to lodge your application, as late, pro forma, or emailed applications will not be accepted.

Going into this program I thought I would only be learning the mechanical aspect of rail (anything moving) but this is far from the truth
