The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in journalism or a similar field and will partake in tasks such as:

• Gathering and writing original news stories for publication in print and online platforms
• Developing positive relationships with key people and organisations
• Breaking news stories and creating engaging content
• Contributing to news planning meetings and liaising with the Editor regarding story development
• Interviewing and photographing subjects confidently and professionally
• Representing the Company professionally and courteously

About you

The Kalgoorlie Miner is seeking a journalist to join their team in Kalgoorlie. This opportunity is open to recent graduates, journalism students, or even career changers looking to enter the field. The successful candidate will report to the Editor and cover a variety of news stories in a region known for its potential for breaking news and impactful stories. This role offers the chance to hone journalistic skills while contributing to a daily newspaper published Monday to Saturday.

The successful candidate is someone with the following qualities:

• The ability to work under high pressure and be flexible with work hours
• Strong interviewing and communication skills
• A sense of urgency and focus on deadlines
• A passion for local news (with an interest in government-focused news desirable)
• Existing skills or a strong desire to upskill with digital production and social media promotion
• A valid driver’s licence
