Your role

UNHCR’s Regional Representation is based in Canberra and its mandate covers Australia, and New Zealand as well as 14 Pacific Islands Countries and Territories (PICTs) including Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle individual case queries, including calls, emails and letters from refugees, asylum seekers and individuals who fall under UNHCR’s mandate
  • Liaise with UNHCR colleagues around the world and a range of other domestic and international actors in order to provide appropriate support, information and advice to persons contacting UNHCR
  • Prepare and participate in refugee law and protection training activities;
  • Support the drafting of reports, briefing notes and background papers on matters relevant to UNHCR protection activities
  • Participate in and report from seminars, meetings and other events relevant to the organisation.
  • Undertake independent research on issues relevant to domestic or international asylum legislation, policy and practice;
  • Assist in the preparation of legal interventions;
  • Otherwise, support the daily running of the office and in particular of the Legal Protection Unit, including administrative support

Training & development

UNHCR Australia provides interns with a learning opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experience related to their academic programme or future work in a field related to UNHCR’s mission. Internship opportunities are periodically offered at the UNHCR Regional Representation in Canberra.

UNHCR Australia interns may be eligible to receive financial support from an outside party, usually a university, and are strongly encouraged to explore their sponsorship options. A Food and Local Transportation Allowance at 50% of the monthly salary of General Service level 3 step 1 is provided monthly to non-sponsored interns only.

About you

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be recent graduates or have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in the legal field
  • Have experience and/or a demonstrated interest in asylum and refugee protection or human rights.
