What it does: Today, the RMH is one of the largest health providers in the state, providing a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services; as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient and community programs.

Mission: The Royal Melbourne Hospital is one of Australia's leading public healthcare providers. Our mission is simple - to provide world-class healthcare for our community by embracing discovery and learning, building collaborative relationships, and engaging patients in their care.

Size and presence: Thank you to each of our 10,400 employees and volunteers who work so hard to make Melbourne Health a great place to work and a great place to receive care.

Best known for: The Royal Melbourne is part of Australia's public health care system and offers hospital care to any Australian resident under Medicare arrangements.

The good bits: One of the staff found RMH an enjoyable place to work. It is dynamic and the two days are never the same. Management seems to generally care about staff.

The not-so-good bits: The only issue is a lack of progression within the pharmacy department and lots of fixed-term contracts, so limited job security.

The Royal Melbourne hospital story

The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) began in 1848 as Victoria’s first public hospital. And while we only had 10 beds to our name, we had the community of Melbourne behind us, and we were ready to provide the best possible care for those in need. Since those early years, we’ve moved forward with purpose. Always at the forefront, leading the way on improving the quality of life for all.

Today, the RMH is one of the largest health providers in the state, providing a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services; as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient and community programs.

Our care extends from the City through Royal Park and 32 mental health services across the north-western suburbs of Melbourne. We are a designated state-wide provider for services including trauma, and we lead centres of excellence for tertiary services in several key specialties including neurosciences, nephrology, oncology, cardiology and virtual health.

We are surrounded by a precinct of brilliant thinkers, and we’re constantly collaborating to set new benchmarks in health excellence – benchmarks that impact across the globe. This includes the world-renowned Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, our joint venture with the University of Melbourne. And while the work we’re doing takes us in inspiring new directions, we lead with kindness that defines a better standard of care.

Our people of more than 11,000 strong, embody who we are and what we stand for. Our reputation for caring for all Melburnians is as essential to who we are as any scientific breakthrough we make. We’re here when it matters most, and we’ll continue to be the first to speak out for our diverse community’s wellbeing.

Melbourne is a great place to work and live

Melbourne is famous for its sporting events (particularly Australian Rules Football), fashion, festivals and café culture. The city has repeatedly been voted as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Melbourne is a young city. Half its population falls within a median age of 35 years. It is a good-looking city with beautiful historical buildings, public parks and gardens, juxtaposed with ultra-modern buildings and urban art.

Melbourne has a lot to offer, vibrant café and restaurant culture, fabulous nightlife, including live bands, theatres, cinemas, art galleries and specialty stores. It is considered to be fashion capital of Australia with a wealth of high-end boutiques and a strong sense of fashion. We have good public education and a thriving public health system, supported by a highly functioning private health system and a variety of associated health services supported by both the state and federal governments.

People who move to Melbourne can enjoy living the inner city lifestyle or one in the outlying suburbs with their quiet streets and proximity to schools as well as semi-rural locations. There are many quirky places to live in inner city Melbourne, a wide variety of public gardens and parks, access to beaches and a wide range of short trip holiday destinations such as wine regions, the Great Ocean Road, the penguins and seals in Phillip Island and the mountains in northern Victoria. Australians generally enjoy living an outdoor lifestyle. We enjoy our temperate climate and being part of a prosperous and safe country.

All sessions are assessed by medical and education professionals as well as the junior medical staff in attendance in order to maintain a high standard in delivery of medical education.

Life support training

The hospital provides different levels of life support training for all staff involved in patient care. All interns will undergo resuscitation skills training during orientation. In addition to this, the training is held a further four times a year over a 3-hour block, providing staff the opportunity to maintain certification and increase confidence in critical situations.
